Ghost Opera
2020
Sound, light
Ghost Opera (2020) is a new sound/light installation based on bird calls. The sounds or ‘voices’ are manipulated and extracted, creating a sound collage played from a speaker outside the building. Inside, a long tube extending from the ceiling almost to the floor shines a flickering light at the bottom mimicking the sounds outside. The sounds used in the installation are extracted from recordings of extinct bird species – their voices creating a connection between past and future species. Like messages from a different dimension – a ‘ghost opera’ – the installation establishes an emotional connection, re-establishing the presence of the birds, perhaps giving them a place into the future.
